| This 45-minute ethnomusical cinema-verite documentary produced by Hisham Abdullah is a biopic of Halim Yazid, a dikir barat activist and tukang karut. Born in Kelantan, Halim was raised in a poor family, yet it didn¡¯t hinder him from trying his best to improve his quality of life. An academic life in Universiti Malaya developed his perspectives and through dikir barat he channels his passion for this traditional oral art form. Halim¡¯s spontaneous, improvisatory dikir barat songs are experiments on form as he continually searches for his own inner voice. The documentary traces Halim Yazid¡¯s roots in Kelantan, a state in the East Coast of Malaysia, and the socio-economic influences in his songs. |
